August Book Review

As promised here are the books I read during my free time on Vacation.

#1 Mercy by Jodi Picoult

An interesting look at mercy killing. Is is wrong to kill someone who is in terrible pain and dying anyway? As usual Jodi Picoult looks at all side of this topic and makes you ponder what you would do.

#2 Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyers

The long awaited finale to the vampire love story. I had five days to read it before Andrew caught up with us in Minocqua. I finished it in 3! Let me just state, these books are just for entertainment value. They are just FUN!!! It was not where I would have taken the story and I was a little disappointed with the book. Can't wait to see the movie "Twilight" in November.

#3 The Lost Boys by Orson Scott Card

Okay, I love the Woman of Genesis series of books that Orson Scott Card wrote. They are brilliant. So I thought I would check out some of his other books. This is the story of a young boy who moves to a new town and has a little trouble fitting in. His teacher is cruel to him and the other kids won't play with him. He develops some imaginary friends that start to worry his parents. He talks to them like they are in his video game and when playing outside. Finally, they realize that the boys that he talks to have the same names as boys who have disappeared from his town over the years. Where does it go from there? One of his older books, again not a life changing, thought provoking book, but a fun read for vacation.

#4 Enchantment by Orson Scott Card

Finished that one and decided to tackle another one. This one is more of a fantasy fairy tale. It looks at the origin of some of the fairy tales we were brought up on. Interesting and fun.

#5 The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (2nd Read)

I made Andrew read this on vacation. I loved this book the first time I read it about 5 years ago and told him he should read it too. When he was done I decided to read it again so we could talk about details I had forgotten. Still love it and decided to read "The Pilgrimage".

#6 The Space Between Us by Thrity N. Umbrigar

This was my non-fluffy book. I liked it so much that I recommended it and am reviewing it at our bookclub meeting in Nov. It is the story of two woman, the wealthy Parsi woman and her poor servant. Their intertwined story reveals the class system and gender roles in modern India. You feel for both woman and the struggles that life has placed before them. Good Read!

#7 The Holy Secret by James Ferrell

I'm trying to be better about reading good church books along with all the other books I read. This book goes in my top 10 books ever. I love the way the author writes. He invites you into a conversation with the two characters in the book. I had so many ahh-haa moments while reading this. It is brillant. I can't wait to read "The Peacegiver".
